HISTORY

Some events are like comets – they shine and then go out. They disappear and nobody misses them. But there are also those events which are still remembered even after many years. They were in fact fixed stars of the sports heaven. They fascinated fans not only at home but also in the world for decades.

This is also the case of the athletics meeting in Bratislava, which, in its most famous era, was a part of the world elite IAAF Grand Prix. Renowned experts of the queen of sports called it with respect with flattering adjective “Zürich of the East” for years. It was characteristic for its traditionally strong international competition, great performances, including world and European records, and full stands.

In preparation of the 51st volume it relied on partners with which the most beautiful era of the meeting has been linked. It chose a combination of a successful multinational company (Slovnaft as part of the MOL Group) and renowned Slovak media: public institution Radio and Television (RTVS) and influential daily newspaper (Pravda). Under the logo of the most famous period, which is the work of a Slovak painter Miroslav Cipár, the meeting successfully returned to the world athletic scene on Saturday 4 June 2016.

Dear athletics and sports fans,

The legendary P-T-S meeting, which had its first 50 editions held in Bratislava and another seven after its revival in 2016 at the x-bionic® sphere sports complex in Šamorín, has found a new home once again. At least for the next two editions, it will take place at the National Athletics Stadium in Banská Bystrica.

Many of you have surely wondered why the “Pétéeska” moved to Urpín. The answer is simple: for economic and logistical reasons, and moreover, the leadership of the Slovak Athletics Federation (SAZ) agreed that this prestigious event could be an excellent test for us, the organizers of the 2024 European Athletics U18 Championships, which will be held in Banská Bystrica.

Banská Bystrica is a city of athletics – there is no doubt about that. The popular Banskobystrická latka has been organized there for almost three decades, and in the past, it hosted the European Cup and the European Team Championships. Last year, the stadium in Štiavničky provided an excellent atmosphere for the athletics competitions of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF).

And one more significant aspect: Banská Bystrica has been and still is a stronghold of Slovak athletics, thanks to Dukla and other clubs such as the former Slávia PF and its successor, AK ŠK UMB Banská Bystrica.

If you look at the Slovak senior teams participating in major events, they are predominantly composed of athletes from Dukla Banská Bystrica. Therefore, I believe that you will come to support them in their home environment in the largest possible numbers. They deserve your support, as does the P-T-S meeting, which is among the treasures of Slovak sports.
